Why lisa kathan photography?
What sets me apart from other photographers is my eye for the moments that are often overlooked. It's obvious that you want good photos of you and your partner and photos of the goings on of the day; any wedding photographer can provide that, but what I bring to the table is an eye for the nuances of the day and the subtle emotions. Not only do I capture the main events, but all the things behind the scenes. Simply put, I capture the feeling of your wedding day and all the little details that make up the big picture.
Q: THERE ARE SO MANY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS OUT THERE. HOW DO WE KNOW IF YOU ARE THE BEST PHOTOGRAPHER FOR US?
Let's meet! It's so important to me that we be a fit for each other, and that you feel like I can best capture your day. You'll be spending a huge part of your wedding day with your photographer, so it should be someone you feel comfortable with and genuinely like.
Usually I do a video chat for our first meeting, which ends up being super convenient for both of us (unless you're in Lake Co, then let's try and grab coffee!). If you decide you'd like me to be your photographer, we will definitely get together before your wedding day... like meet at your venue, or grab drinks!
Another important step is to check out my work on my website...the blog is great place for that, as well as Instagram and Facebook. My style is fairly organic without tons of posing and I edit with true-to-life colors. I want you to be able to look at your photos 10 years from now and love them as much then as you will the day you get them, and not be distracted by trendy editing.
Q: DO YOU ONLY PHOTOGRAPH INTIMATE WEDDINGS?
Nope! I do take on a few larger weddings per year. But as I mentioned previously, having a good fit with your photographer is the most important. So if I feel like what you need would be better served by another photographer, I will absolutely let you know!
Q: WE ARE ELOPING/HAVING A TINY WEDDING AND DON'T NEED 8 HOURS OF WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY. WILL YOU WORK WITH US?
A thousand time YES! Elopements and tiny weddings are my absolute favorite and I love photographing them! In fact, I offer hourly pricing that is PERFECT for smaller weddings and elopements.
Q: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO HAVE YOU AS OUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?
I like to keep things simple, so our wedding photography is priced hourly. No packages! I like to uncover with each couple exactly what they need for their wedding (five hours of coverage with two photographers, and an engagement session? No problem!), so you're not stuck with things you can't use. I also love elopements and tiny weddings so the hourly pricing tends to work much better for those. I will send any pricing information in an email to you after you complete the inquiry form on my website.
Q: WHAT TYPE OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT? DO YOU REQUIRE A DOWN PAYMENT?
Credit card or PayPal is preferred payment, but I may be able to make arrangements to receive a cash or check. If you decide you want me to be your wedding photographer, I will send you an online contract and invoice, and you may pay securely using any card or make arrangement for cash or check payment.
A retainer fee along with your signed contract is required to hold the date and time of your wedding or session. Elopements and couples sessions typically require 100% payment, unless your wedding or session is more than 60 days out. Full weddings require a 50% retainer, with the remaining due 30 days before your wedding date (so I'm not reminding you of your final payment amid the stress of the last weeks before your wedding!).
Q: WHY SHOULD WE DO AN ENGAGEMENT SESSION?
There are many reasons it's important to take engagement photos once you make it official. As a couple who likely has never been photographed together professionally, the engagement session is one of the greatest services you and your fiance can take advantage of prior to your wedding. Some couples may feel it's a waste of time or isn't necessary, but there are several valuable reasons why you'll benefit from utilizing this opportunity.
The first is that it lets us get to know each other! We will be spending A LOT of time together on your wedding day and if we've had a chance to hang out together for an engagement session, you'll feel much more comfortable in front of the camera on your big day!
Engagement sessions are also a lot of fun. I do my best to make sure that it's a light-hearted and relaxed time that gives you time to reconnect with each other and create some memories. Think about it as a date, and plan to go out after you get all dressed up for your session! It can also be a great time to have trial wedding makeup done so that you know if there are any adjustments that you want to make for your wedding day.
Also, if you book your wedding with me, your engagement session is discounted...so hello! These sessions are also perfect for post-wedding sessions, day-after wedding sessions and anniversary sessions.
Q: HOW DO I KNOW HOW MANY HOURS OF COVERAGE WE NEED?
This is a great question! We'll talk about this in more detail at our first meeting, but I carefully work on a preliminary timeline with you. I am realistic about your budget, but also keeping in mind how much time things that you might want photographed with take. At the end of the day, it's up to you!
Q: ARE YOU INSURED?
For sure! I have up to $1,000,000 in coverage. Being insured is a basic part of being a professional photographer...so please ask this question of ALL the wedding photographers you speak with!
Q: DO YOU TRAVEL FOR WEDDINGS?
Definitely! Just let me know where you are getting married and I will prepare a quote for travel expenses. I do not charge travel fees for weddings in Chicago or Milwaukee areas.
Q: WE ALWAYS FEEL AWKWARD IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA. WILL YOU TELL US HOW TO STAND AND POSE?
My style of photography is very natural, but I always start out giving you some direction. Often I will photograph you as you naturally react to interactive prompts that I give you. Even though some of the photos I take may have you looking at the camera, most of them have a more natural, relaxed, authentic feel. My clients (even the guys!) almost always say they had a lot of fun and really loved how they felt about themselves when I was photographing them
Q: DO YOU DO OFFER IMAGES IN BLACK AND WHITE?
I love the timeless beauty of black and white photos and always include some in each gallery. Each photo that I edit in black and white is thoughtfully chosen and I often shoot intentionally planning for an image to be delivered in black and white. It is a thoughtful process to ensure that the best version of every image is what is delivered. Because of this, I don't simply covert every color image to black and white. If there are specific black and white images that you are hoping for, please let me know on the day of your wedding or session and we can work together to create the images you want!
Q: CAN WE GIVE YOU A LIST OF SHOTS THAT WE WANT?
If there are one or two images that are particularly important to you, I would love to know about them! Otherwise, it is best for me to capture your day as it unfolds organically. I find that if I have a shot list that I'm constantly looking at, its easy for me to miss tiny special moments as they are happening.
The exception to this are the formal family photographs. I will contact you about a month before your wedding for a list of family groupings that you would like captured during this time. Having a detailed and well-organized list helps us move through this portion of the day quickly and efficiently so that you can go back to enjoying your party!
Q: DO WE GET TO SEE A SNEAK PEEK? AND WHEN DO WE GET OUR PHOTOS?
I will select and edit one image of you both from your wedding day, and post it on Facebook and Instagram. It works beautifully as an opportunity for you to share a photo with your family and friends, or even to announce that you got married to the world! If you want me to hold off on sharing the sneak peek for a few days (like if you eloped!), definitely let me know by your wedding day.
About 4-6 weeks after your wedding, I'll send you an email link that will take you to your private online gallery, where you can download your photos. You'll get about 100 photos per hour; sometimes more, sometimes less. In your gallery, you can also do other cool stuff, like order an album, and even hide photos you don't want friends or family to see, and then share the link with them! They won't be able to download images, but they can see your photos and order prints and albums themselves.
Q: DO YOU OFFER PRINTS AND ALBUMS?
I'm super passionate about getting your wedding photos into an album, one that will last a lifetime! I design and sell only the highest quality hand-stitched albums on fine art papers. You might only pull out your wedding album once a year, but it will be cherished by your future children. I plead with you not to let your wedding images sit in a file on your computer, never to be seen.
Your online gallery is a very convenient place to order prints, and for your parents or others who want to order prints. Simply share your gallery link with them and they are able to choose and order their own prints and products which will be shipped directly to them.
I'd love you for you to print your images and albums from your online gallery because I can guarantee the quality, but you are more than welcome to print your photos elsewhere if you would like.
Q: WILL YOU HAVE A 2ND PHOTOGRAPHER AT MY WEDDING?
The answer is maybe! I don't automatically bring a second photographer, but I will almost always have my husband, Erich, with me. He assists me throughout the day, which may include being a second photographer at various points.
When it comes to larger weddings, or weddings where you have multiple locations, I may recommend a second photographer, and there is an additional fee. I contract only other professional photographers who work as lead photographers. So they are definitely NOT second best, just an additional professional photographer at your wedding!
Q: DO YOU USE FLASH?
Nearly all the images you see on my site were shot without flash. I am primarily a natural light photographer and I can shoot in pretty much anything, as long as there is some light, without flash. However, I do use flash occasionally, such as when the reception is very dark or during family photos. I don't do wedding portraits with flash, since I am trying to capture so many moments, flash is an inhibitor to being able to capture those moments.
Q: WHAT KIND OF EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I use professional level Canon gear and have backups for everything. Do you love photography? Let me know and we can geek out about equipment together!
Q: CAN WE HAVE THE RAW FILES?
I don't deliver RAW files. The RAW files are an unfinished product and can't even be opened without special editing software. Also, part of my editing process is to work hard to bring out the best artistry in each final image, so I deliver you a gorgeous and cohesive gallery.
